Interesting Technologies at the Consumer Electronics Show 2018

CES 2018

The Consumer Electronics Show is the biggest event for consumer electronics in the world. It is the event where small start-ups as well as large tech companies come to expose their newest inventions, technologies and innovations. Year after year companies come up new and awesome technologies and the CES is the best place to show them off. As always, there were all kind of technologies and gadgets at the CES 2018. From the usual electronics like televisions, computers, smart devices through FinTech innovations to exotic technologies like PetTech and mush more. The PetTech industry is fast growing and many people are willing to spend more and more money for their pets to live the life. The CES usually sets the pace and gives a idea of what to expect during the year from the tech industry. Lets look at some of the most exciting and promising presentations at the CES 2018.

First, we have to recognize that this year, AI and voice assistants were a big deal at the Consumer Electronics Show. Almost all companies tried to make their products smart or smarter with AI and voice assistants. In this category, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa clearly emerged at the top. Voice assistants have found application in almost every device or appliance, from laptops to refrigerators and more. Particularly, Alexa could soon be getting into Acer and Asus laptops. Samsung presented its own voice assistant which it called Bixby and is set to work with most Samsung devices. Commercially, this is very interesting as companies like Amazon have been able to take advantage of it. Most people would like all their smart devices to be able to talk to each other. With time, Samsung hopes its voice assistant will compete with Google Assistant and Alexa.

Laptops at CES 2018

Another hot topic at the CES 2018 was laptops. Laptop makers never disappoint us and this year was no different. They keep developing ever powerful, slick and beautiful machines. This year came with a surprise collaboration between Intel and AMD to make chips featuring Intel’s newest core processors and AMD’s Radeon RX Vega M graphics. The chips were announce in new laptops from HP and Dell, the HP Spectre X360 15 and the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1. Hybrid laptops are making their place in the laptop market and manufacturers are not relenting their efforts in making them better . Dell’s XPS 15 not only has a wider screen but also features a new maglev keyboard. With the chips they carry, these machines are not only nice looking but promise to be powerful as well.

There was lenovo’s X1 Carbon and X1 Yoga which are both new machines with HDR support. Acer presented the thinnest laptop in the world, Acer Swift 7. Last year Acer made a sensation with its Predator 21X which was the most powerful laptop in the world. Though it was only a limited edition laptop, it showed just how serious the laptop maker is about imposing itself in the market. In the same light, Acer Swift 7 is the worlds thinnest laptop. Acer continues to set standards and push frontiers in the industry.

On smartphones, one of the most interesting presentation was that of Huawei’s Mate 10 Pro and its plan to conquer the American Market. Though AT&T withdrew from the agreement to launch the phone in the US, Huawei remains confident about the year. Huawei still aims for a great year as it sales in China and other countries in the region keeps it going. Another Chinese smartphone maker that made a remarkable presentation is Vivo. The company presented the worlds first smartphone with an in-display fingerprint scanner. This is major security to the smartphone, this could be applied to other smart devices. Blackberry announcement the Blackberry KeyOne Bronze edition. While it is not an entirely new phone, this edition comes with new colors and dual SIM.

TVs and Displays at CES 2018

Now on TVs and displays, it was as impressive as ever. There were a good number of TVs and displays presented at the CES from major manufacturers. LG’s 65-inch rollable OLED TV was possibly amazing presentation at the CES 2018. This is why people await the CES, too see technologies like this unfold. LG’s wallpaper TV is a 4K screen with eye catching looks. Then, there is the surprising presentation from Nvidia. The company which is best known for its graphic processors which have found themselves in many devices presented the Nvidia Big Format Gaming Display (BFGD). This should get gamers excited. Another jaw dropping presentation was that of Samsung’s extra wide modular TV. It is a massive 146-inch TV which can connect to other units to make an even bigger display. For its size, the TV has an excellent image quality delivered by its microLED pixels which can each produce their own light.

Other technologies

Virtual reality technology was also present at the CES 2018. Huawei, Lenovo, HTC and others presented very interesting VR innovations. VR is a technology that many are still experimenting with but some companies are already at the forefront and we should see more later in the year. As always, the gaming industry is there to provide gamers and the general public with juicy hints on what to expect during the year. There was the presentation of the remake of the Nintendo’s Game Boy by Hyperkin. The new version called Ultra Game Boy keeps the same form as its 1989 original but is loaded with better technology. It has a backlit RGB display, stereo speakers, built-in battery and a new aluminum body. This will sure find a place in the hearts of Game Boy nostalgics and those who cherish retro games like super Mario Land and Tetris.

SanDisk which is already well known for its storage devices presented a prototype of a 1TB thumb stick storage. The company is pushing the limits of storage technology. Though this is only a prototype, it is very impressive and the thought of walking around with a 1TB storage that small makes me smile. The drive comes with a USB-C connection which promises high speed data transfer. Samsung and LG also presented refrigerators with build in screens for information display.
