Five Best-Selling Video Games Of All Time

Best-selling video games ever

Video games are among the best in the entertainment industry. Gone are the days in the 1980s when there was just a hand full of games around. There was no video games industry and certainly no super powerful game consoles. Still, a game like Tetris created in those days is one of the best-selling video games ever. The evolution of computers pulled along other technologies together with games. Today, games come with better graphics, gameplays, realistic environments and more. Over time, a video games industry has developed and weighs billions. Millions of video games are sold every year. Franchises like Grand Theft Auto(GTA), Call of Duty, Mario and others have sold millions of units and are still selling. The games released this year are built with better technology than last year and so on. Powerful game machines and consoles are available to play all kinds of games.

Some games have sold so much they need special attention. Let’s look at a list of best-selling video games ever. These games have attained exceptional figures in sales.

1. Tetris

Best-selling games ever

Tetris was created more than 3 decades ago by Alexey Pajitnov working at the Computing Centre of the Soviet Academy of Sciences. He first developed the game to entertain himself and his friends. The game did not gain worldwide popularity until its launch on Nintendo’s Gameboy system in 1989. It sold over 35 million units on the system making it the best selling video game ever on the Gameboy platform. Globally, Tetris has sold over 495 million units on all platforms. This is an extraordinary number given the simplicity of the game. Most games to take whole teams and large resources to build but none has come even half close to this figure. It is a game you know can’t finish, yet you keep on playing for hours and days. This “addictive” nature of Tetris is surprising given again the games’ simplicity.

2. Minecraft

Minecraft is the only game apart from Tetris to have sold over 100 million copies. It is a first-person action game developed and published by Mojang. The game has a large fan base with players of almost all ages from young to adults. Minecraft had sold 106 copies last taking it above the symbolic 100 million mark. As of now, the game has sold over 122 million copies worldwide making it one of the best-selling video games ever. The huge gap in sales should give an idea of how strong Tetris has been in the industry. Microsoft bought Mojang in 2014 but the game is still available all major platforms.

3. Wii Sports

wii sports

Wii Sports is a physical simulation video game Developed by Nintendo EAD (Nintendo Entertainment Analysis & Development). The game came with the Nintendo’s Wii console launched back in 2006. Wii Sports is of course published by Nintendo and was the most popular title on the console. Wii Sports sold over 83 million units worldwide making it one of the best-selling video games ever. Given that the Wii console sold about 101 million units, the Wii Sports was clearly the spear-head of the Wii console. The games extreme popularity lies in its very fun gameplay. The absence of complex controls and tricks made the game accessible to any person. No need to be a gamer to have fun with Wii Sports, thus young and old could joyfully play the game.

4. Grand Theft Auto (GTA) V

GTA V is an open world action-adventure video game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games in 2013. It is probably the most surprising game to find on this list given the type of game it is. With its crude content and visuals, GTA V is no conventional family fun game. Unlike most of the games on this list, GTA V is not an all happiness and fun game, it can get rough at times. As of March 2017, it has sold over 80 million units. GTA V’s strong content and raw gameplay raised controversies here and there even before its release back in 2013. But this has had no effect on the game’s popularity and sales. Instead, it seems to somehow increase its appeal and make people want to play it even more.

5. Super Mario Bros.

Another 1980s game which has gained worldwide recognition and sold millions of units. It is no surprise that Super Mario Bros. is one of the best selling video games ever, it is a true classic. The game was developed by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo in 1985. With over 40.2 million units sold, Super Mario Bros. is one of the games that made Super Mario a star game character. Super Mario Bros. was released on the Nintendo Entertainment System and gained worldwide popularity together with Super Mario. The games sales figure is also helped by the fact it was originally bundled with many NES systems. Super Mario Bros. is a fun and enjoyable game that has been around for a really long time. It may not be as popular as it used to but few games have bitten its record sales.

These games make up the best-selling video games ever developed with combined sales of more than 820.2 million. If the list had to continue, the next 5 games have all sold less than 40 million units. Nintendo dominates this list with two games and largely dominates the top ten list. The company is a true giant in the video games industry and I hope it continues to provide us with even better games for a long time. For now, the global figure of Tetris is not under any threat and I don’t any in the near or far future.
